Michael “Mike” Stroup was born about 1779 on upper Hoyle's Creek, son of Jacob Stroup by his third wife Nancy.

1800 MARRIAGE TO JEAN GOODSON

When Mike was twenty-one years old, he married Jane Goodson with a Lincoln County Marriage Bond dated 29 Mar 1800. For which the bond surety was Michael Pentorff, perhaps a relative of the bride.

Since Mike was his father’s youngest son, born when Jacob was fifty-five years old, by the time Mike married his father was seventy-six, and in need of a help in running his large and prosperous farm, and so the young couple moved into the parental home with the expectation of one day owning it.

HOYLE'S CREEK HOME PLACE

As Jacob Stroup’s children married, he allowed various ones to build their homes on tracts of his land, but without title change. Therefore, his youngest son Mike Stroup lived all his life at the old family home place at “The Grove” (of oak trees) on upper Hoyle's Creek between (modern) Alexis and High Shoals in old Tryon/Lincoln (now Gaston) County, N.C.

Michael’s farm was a tract of land purchased by his father in 1770  who later added other tracts to it until he owned a total around 800 to 900 acres.

On March 27, 1800, Jacob made a Deed of Sale of the 132 acres of his home place to his son Michael, a deed proved after Jacob’s death by Joseph Abernathy (who wrote Jacob’s will) at the Lincoln County court in January 1805. Since Michael’s father reputedly had twenty-two children by three wives, seven being sons, Michael’s home place was almost surrounded by his siblings along with his uncles and cousins.

1850 CENSUS, GASTON CO., N.C.

In 1846 the south part of old Lincoln County, which included the old Stroup home areas, was cut off to form the new county of Gaston.  When the 1850 Federal Census was made for Gaston County, household #327:

Michael Stroup, aged 77, born c1779, farmer, and property value $150.

Jane Stroup, age 31, born c1819.

Jonas Stroup, age 17, born c1833

Solomon Stroup, age 35, born c1815, farmer.

The households on either side of him belonged to (brothers) Lawson Stroup and Isaac Stroup.

Michael also appears in the 1810,1820,1830 and 1840 census, however it is difficult to figure out the children. As family lore says the children went back and forth between families.
