Matthew
A. Stroup Matthew A. Stroup, a member
of the Gaston County bar, practicing at Cherryville, was born August 2, 1890, in
the county where he still makes his home, a son of Ephriam D. and Amanda Jane
(Hicks) Stroup. The father, also a
native of Gaston County, was born in 1857 and in young manhood began farming the
old home place of ninety acres, to which he added from time to time until at his
death he was cultivating four hundred acres. He was a member of the Baptist church and a Democrat in
politics, and when he passed away in 1932 was laid to rest in Mount Zion
churchyard. His wife, who was born
in Cleveland County, North Carolina, in 1856, was a daughter of Oliver and Mary
(Kendricks) Hicks. She, too,
belonged to the Baptist church and was buried in Mount Zion churchyard in 1924.
In the family of Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Stroup were five children, as
follows: Alfred, a resident of
Gaston County; Mary, who became the wife of P. C. Dellinger, of Gaston County;
Steven, of Gaston County; Matthew A., whose name introduces this record; and
Elizabeth, the wife of R. F. Putman, of Gaston County. The graded schools of
Cherryville afforded Matthew A. Stroup his early educational opportunities and
he afterward attended the Bowling Springs high school.
While at the University of North Carolina he qualified for the practice
of law, winning his LL. B. degree in 1915.
In the same year he was admitted to the bar and opened an office in
Cherryville, where he has since continued in active professional work.
He has also been one of North Carolina’s lawmakers, having served in
the House of Representatives in 1919-1920.
There seems to be a question about Matthew's given name. The first document is a copy of his birth record showing his name as Matthew Alfred born 27 Aug 1890. The second document is his draft registration for World War 1. It was filled out in June 1917. He stated his name was Matthew Augustus and his year of birth as 1891.
