Marriage Bond 1821

ORIGIN

Jonas Stroup was born in 1796 or 1800, son of Philip Stroup, Sr. and his first wife Mary “Molly” Eddleman. (1) His full name was probably Johannes Jonas Stroup, it being German custom for people to be called by their middle names.

MARRIAGE

Jonas married Rebeckah Cloninger with a Lincoln County Marriage Bond dated 25 Nov 1821, Bond Surety, and the bride's brother, Moses Cloninger. (2)

THE CLONINGERS

Rebeckah Cloninger was born c1802, daughter of Elizabeth (Lizzie) Cloninger  (daughter of Adam Cloninger,  (1)  The old family explanation for Elizabeth’s  lack of a husband was that "Lizzie eloped with a German Catholic, but her Lutheran family refused to recognize the marriage for religious reasons, so she eventually left him and raised her children, Moses and Rebecca, as Cloningers". (3) Modern researchers say this is incorrect, and believe the father of her child was one of their Rhyne neighbors.  Since there were other Rhyne - Stroup marriages, he was probably not free to marry her, although theirs was more than a passing fancy shown by her having two children by him.

1848 HOME PLACE

The 1848 Gaston Co. Tax List showed Jonas Stroup as head of a household at Duhart's Creek, in the vicinity of Gastonia.

JONAS WILL

In late July 1853 when Jonas was 57 years old, he perhaps ill with the typhoid fever that was so prevalent in the area at this time because he drew his will and died on the same day.  The October court probated it.

He named his wife Rebecca, sons Johnnie, Maxary A., Rufus, Wesley, Cephas, and his daughters “who are unmarried and living with me”, Lodoesco, Mary Rebecca, Frances C., Nancy Connally and Dorcas L., and his daughters Elizabeth and Caroline, "both married".

Will executors were his sons Johannan and Maxary A. Stroup.  Witnesses, Wm. Dickson and J. M. Hanna.  (4)

Jonas Stroup died 30 July 1853, and was buried in the cemetery of Christ Lutheran Church at Stanley, N.C. (1)
