I submitted a DNA test to verify which immigrant my family originated from. There was a question of if it was Matthias Stroope or Johann Pieter Straub. My father and his sisters thought it was Johann Pieter Straub but the wonderful lady Ethel Belle Stroupe had convinced a lot of people that Matthias Stroope was the immigrant that the North Carolina Stroup's originated from. I hate that Ethel Belle is gone because she would have enjoyed all this. You can view my results at Straub DNA these results have caused quite a stir among Stroup researchers. My results are the one with Stroupe as the name submitted. As you can see I matched 4 others that are descendants of Johann's son Pieter.

This is our Stroup Group for exchanging Stroup information and thoughts. We are interested in all lines of Stroups. We have photos and documents from North Carolina, Georgia, Missouri, and Alabama Stroups plus others. I have Ethel Stroupe's files and am posting them as fast as I can convert them from Apple to Windows files. She has Bio's on most of the early Stroups which I have posted. We have several members that are very active in research and make frequent "road trips", so come join us and enjoy all the information available.

Palatine passengers Johann Pieter Straub and his wife Maria Barbara with sons Pieter Straub and Jacob Straub arrived on the ship "Pensilvania" (note spelling) Merchant, John Stedman commander, from Rotterdam in Holland to Philadelphia. Qualified Sept 18, 1733 (qualified meaning the act of the German immigrants taking or swearing allegiance to the British Crown.) There is no clear record of the exact arrival date but passengers normally "qualified" within a day or two after arrival.

"Palatine passengers" was explained by Mr. Hocker as being those people from the Palatine region in lower Rhine country- Frankfurt-on-the-main, below Cologne. Because the boats are recorded as having sailed from Rotterdam or Amsterdam, Holland most people believed these people came from Holland. However, that is not the truth. The "Palatine Passengers" were natives of Germany. Under the then government of Palatine Princes, there were many small provinces which were constantly being overrun by wars and these Palatine people fled Germany, not because of religious persecutions, as is the popular belief, but for economic reasons and to escape wars. They sailed from Holland because it was the easiest avenue of escape, since they could get from Palatine into Holland and take a boat at Rotterdam, it being the nearest port from the Palatine region.

About 1734 the Straub family settled in Colebrookdale Twp. In 1744 the Straub family moved to Maiden Creek (Berks Co.)
