1939 Cherryville High Yearbook

First photo is from Dad's 1939 yearbook senior picture. Second photo is the 1939 Cherryville High basketball team. I didn't print the scores because it wasn't a pretty sight.

Dad should have graduated in 1938 however one evening he was rushing to finish his daily chores, caring for the farm animals, when he fell off the mule and broke his collar bone. He was in a big hurry to get done so he could get to town to court Mom. In those days you weren't allowed to attend school with a broken bone.

First photo is Dad in the 1939 Safety Patrol.

Second photo is Dad in 1939 Dramatics Club.

Third photo is Dad in 1939 Glee club. I never knew Dad to sing a note. Uncle Jim told me Dad took guitar lessons for 2 years. He would practice on the back porch. Jim said he and the other boys would go to the door and howl like dogs and Mama would come out and tell them to leave Jack alone.

Photo 3 1938 Cherryville basketball team. They pretty much stunk.

I want to tell you a little story about my Mom. For 65 years I thought her name was Billie Brackett. Well shortly after she passed away in February my sisters and I were talking and one of them said Mom's Birth name wasn't Billie. I said no way. Then one of my sisters said she was visiting Mom and there was a package laying on the table addressed to Willie Estelle Brackett, my sister said "who is that" and Mom looked her in the eye and said with a straight face "Ah she died years ago". At this point I was dying to know the truth. We went to see Mom's sister Evelyn and asked her what Mom's real name was and to my amazement she said Willie Estelle Brackett. What I believe happened was the York County courthouse burned with all the records in the 1920's so all birth records were changed to read "baby so and so". Then Mom had the option to select her own name. Now this wasn't the only name change Mom had. In the picture below from her 1938 High School Yearbook her name is "Billie Ruth Brackett". We think she chose that name because Ruth was a popular name in those times and her best friend was named Ruth. I have found this name changing during this period to be fairly common. It really makes research difficult. A good example is the "Stroup" vs "Stroupe" but that is another story.
