He married 2nd Mary Ellen Smith Nov. 2, 1856; in Aug 1858 moved with brother Jacob Decatur Stroup to Warsaw, Hancock Co., Ill., to start a sawmill; enrolled in Union Army Aug 15, 1862, Basco, Illinois, described as 5'10" 1/2" tall, with blue eyes.

            Andrew J. Stroup served as a 1st Lieutenant for 3 years in the Union Army until January 1865 when he developed severe bronchitis, and was mustered out Oct. 10, 1865 at Baton Rouge, La.  He later resided Jasper County, Missouri, across the Mississippi river from his brother Jacob Stroup in Indiana. 

                        Andrew J. Stroup’s bronchial and lung infections from service in Louisiana’s swamps during the Civil War left him deaf and rheumatic.  In 1883, he appointed his brother Jacob Stroup as his attorney to file for a Civil War pension.  He died Mar 19, 1884 on a visit to his Jacob brother in Warsaw, Illinois, body returned home in Jasper Co., Missouri, for burial.
